Mahitsy is a 28MW run-of-river hydropower project located on the Ikopa River, 35km north-west of the capital, Antananarivo. The project is under construction with targeted completion in Q1 2021 and is estimated to have an annual generation output of 124GWh.
The project’s features comprise a 4.2m high dam structure, four fiberglass-reinforced penstocks, each with a total length of nearly 700m and a powerhouse adjacent to Ikopa River with four Francis turbines.
The project is important to meet the growing demand on the main Antananarivo grid and is aligned with the Government’s long-term strategy of replacing expensive thermal power generation with cheap reliable hydropower.
